parish

parish
This word (from the Greek paroikos, meaning "neighbor") refers to the local Christian community under the care of apastor, appointed by the bishop of the diocese. A parish is a local center for the celebration of the Eucharist and the othersacraments, the preaching of the Gospel, and works of charity and social concern. Parishes are usually territorial, but sometimes they are established for a particular national or ethnic group. (See CCC 2179)
